Cheap Play!

Been spending a bit of time looking for cheap deal on Play.com this weekend, mainly looking for deals on books and DVD's opposed to TVs as I've already got one at the moment. Saying that they are currently selling the Samsung 40" LE40R878BDX/XEU HD LCD TV including postage for £649.99 which is a pretty good deal! Play now have a similar thing to the amazon marketplace called playtrade which I have found to be really good and much better than amazons as the postage is always free! This is good especially for cheap book deals as you know they won't try to charge you something stupid for postage unlike Amazon and ebay so high five ;). Anyway onto what I've been searching for opposed to the new Job Abercrombie novel Last Argument Of Kings.

cheap books and DVDs

Ok cheap books I've brought recently on play include A Thousand Suns by Alex Scarrow which I got brand new for the bargain price of £2.75 or something ridiculously low like that. It's got pretty good reviews at both play.com and amazon so I'm keeping my fingers crossed that its good (then again who can complain when its new and cheap!). On the blurb it says "It's early April of 1945. The Nazi regime is being slowly throttled by the oncoming Russian and Allied armies and Hitler rages uselessly in his Berlin bunker. But the high command have one more throw of the dice to make...An audacious plan is hatched to save the Fatherland and beat off the oncoming apocalypse. All it will take is a hodge-podge squadron of escort fighters, a captured US bomber and one suicidally brave pilot to fly it over the Atlantic into the beating heart of America. Half a century later, a rusting plane is discovered, sunk with its crew, off the coast of New York - a relic from a bygone age. Chris Roland, a brilliant young photographer, is sent to take photos of this time capsule. But it is only when he discovers that the fragments of Nazi uniforms on the decaying corpses that he realises that he has come across a secret so terrible that even fifty years later it could still kill him..." Sounds pretty interesting although I'll reserve my opinion until I've read the book.

Currently I'm reading another bargain from playtrade  The Virgin Suicides which the clever ones amongst you will know was also a film and is available on DVD. The Virgin Suicides is written by Jeffrey Eugenides and from what I've read so far I'm seriously impressed with his storytelling and already contemplating buying his next book Middlesex which is again supposed to be a good read. The Virgin Suicides blurb "The shocking thing about the Lisbon girls was how nearly normal they seemed when their mother let them out for the one and only date of their lives. Twenty years on, their enigmatic, shrouded personalities are embalmed in the memories of the boys who worshipped them and who now recall their shared adolescence: the brassiere draped over a crucifix belonging to the promiscuous Lux; the sisters' breathtaking appearance on the night of the dance; and the sultry, sleepy street across which they watched a family disintegrate and fragile lives disappear." It is pretty dark from what I've read already and I have to say the books cover does make it look like I'm reading some teenage girl novel when I'm on the train lol. I can assure you its not, I had some really wired looks with a previous book called Generation X by Douglas Coupland which was bright luminous pink.

Talking of books that have been made into films I watched the DVD Man On Fire staring Danzel Washington which is a great film in my opinion and apparently the book written by A.J. Quinnell. Another book that I'm adding to my long list of must buy books this year. Man On Fire blurb "Creasy - a rugged, burned-out mercenary...When he takes the job as a bodyguard for the young daughter of an Italian industrialist he is awakened to new life by a beguiling human touch - until the unspeakable atrocity occurs...The child is kidnapped by violent terrorists and Creasy is thrown into a ferocious world of treachery and turmoil. Filled with a single-minded rage, he fights for their lives, whatever the cost - and is transformed, as never before, into the terrifying killing machine he was trained to be." The book should go into the back story of th e characters a lot more which is one of the reasons I love reading novels sometimes rather than watching DVD's.

Another book on my long list (yeah sorry didn't realise it was this long myself lol) is another recent screen adaptation of a novel in Cormac Mccarthy's No Country For Old Men. I just finished reading another of Cormac Mcarthy's books called The Road which is one of the best books I have ever read. I'm just hoping they don't ruin it when it gets turned into a movie. If you only read one book in 2008 trust me and just go and buy The Road you won't be dissapointed. The Road blurb "A father and his son walk alone through burned America, heading through the ravaged landscape to the coast. This is the profoundly moving story of their journey. The Road boldly imagines a future in which no hope remains, but in which two people, `each the other's world entire', are sustained by love. Awesome in the totality of its vision, it is an unflinching meditation on the worst and the best that we are capable of: ultimate destructiveness, desperate tenacity, and the tenderness that keeps two people alive in the face of total devastation.". No Country For Old Men blurb "Llewlyn Moss, hunting antelope near the Rio Grande, stumbles upon a transaction gone horribly wrong. Finding bullet-ridden bodies, several kilos of heroin, and a caseload of cash, he faces a choice - leave the scene as he found it, or cut the money and run. Choosing the latter, he knows, will change everything. And so begins a terrifying chain of events, in which each participant seems determined to answer the question that one asks another: how does a man decide in what order to abandon his life?".

World War Z also sounds really good although I can't find any cheap versions of it at the moment so I'll be patient and wait lol.

Something else that caught my eye was the 19" BenQ G900WA TFT flat panel monitor being sold for just £99.99 which is a right bargain! Would actually consider purchasing it myself but I really need a 21 to 22 inch monitor as spending so much time reading and on te internet my eyes aren't as good as they once were! Laser eye surgery anyone!

I couldn't really find any great DVD's coming out which was rather annoying although 300 is currently just a fiver so I might buy that while its cheap. My mum (yes my mum lol) brought a couple of DVD's this weekend, not that she can stay awake for a whole film being such an old goat lol (sorry mum). She brought Ratatouille and Happy Feet, see told you she's mad, although I have to admit she does occasionally have an eye for a bargain.
