Sony to drop rear projection TVs.
Japanese electronics giant Sony has confirmed plans that it will stop producing rear projection screen TVs. Sony puts the move down to lack of demand (instead of admitting they are rubbish like we all know). However Sony will continue to focus all its attention on the LCD screen TV market (Bravia televisions) and develop the newer technology OLED TVs (organic light-emitting diode).
Sony has been in hot water with its TV operation losing around $520 million USD in the 6 months up to September even though it has been in the press a lot down to the Sony Bravia bunny advert and other marketing campaigns. To stop investing and marketing rear projection TVs Sony will hope to save a bit of money or to reinvest it in OLED which is (if we believe the hype) meant to be the next big thing. Sonys move follows that of Hitachi and Seiko Epson who have already stopped production in favour of LCD and plasma televisions. Expect to see some big in store discounts in your local TV retailer soon!
