Virgin Media adds Sopranos to HD on demand.
Virgin Media's excellent video on demand service has had a huge boost this week with the announcement of two highly acclaimed US TV shows being made available on the service in HD. (If you haven't already its time to go buy a HDMI cable and use your HD LCD TV how it is supposed to be used). This high definition shows include the excellent WW2 drama Band Of Brothers and the award winning gangster TV series The Sopranos (I watched the End Game finale last night and I thought it was the achilles heal of the whole production, sorry).
For those of you who haven't had the chance to experience Virgins TV video on demand service (VOD for short), it allows you to watch what you want when you want (obviously). At the moment I still see this as Virgin Medias one big advantage over rival Sky's service and its improving all the time. Getting two big US TV shows will no doubt help raise the profile of video on demand, but if Virgin want to have long term success with it and to start challenging Sky TV they need to try and get more exclusives. Although unlikely getting shows on the free VOD in HD prior or in sync with a couple of Blu-Ray DVD releases. Whether Virgin has the budget or the industrial weight to make this happen I don't know, but it would be nice if they could (it won't happen I know lol).
Malcolm Wall of Virgin Media, said about the acquisition of the two US TV shows "The public's appetite for high definition programmes continues to grow, so we're delighted to offer our customers two of the US' most popular and highly acclaimed shows in HD. We're constantly adding new films, TV shows and music videos to our already huge On Demand service, but the addition of Band of Brothers and the Sopranos is a real coup."
