Sony Not Worried By Slow 3D TV & Game Sales

This week a Sony Computer Entertainment executive has been saying Sony isn’t overly concerned about the slow sales of 3D televisions and 3D Playstation 3 computer games. Apparently it is easy for games developers to convert their games for 3D televisions on the PS3 and believes Sony will continue to deliver both HD and 3D games for the foreseeable future despite a lack of demand for the new technology.

Senior Sony Computer Entertainment Europe development manager and 3D chief Simon Benson apparently told GI.biz “It’s certainly not a concern for us on the gaming side, the major reason being it’s not like when we’re adding 3D features to a game, it’s not a significant overhead for us. It’s not like we have to justify being able to sell millions more games because of it, it’s just another feature of the game.”

“The developers that we’ve worked with adding 3D features to the games, it’s typically been done through passion of the development teams and interest of the designers to deliver new experiences. It’s not often about the financial side of things. Because it isn’t a huge overhead. It’s not like in 3D live production (TV and movies) where someone has got to make the decision about hiring cameras that cost twice as much and doing post processing that costs ten times more and it’s a significant overhead, there you really have to look at the numbers.”

“What we’re talking about here is, in some cases we’ve had titles where 3D has been half a per cent of overhead. It can literally be the render programmer spending a couple of weeks manipulating it. Particularly if a game already has split screen in it, just take that mode of the game and re-author it to deliver really high quality 3D. So often it’s the case of it doesn’t even hit the radar of whether we should or shouldn’t, it can just be done.”

The Cheap Televisions blogging team are big fans of console gaming especially in full HD. So as you can imagine we are extremely excited about Assassin’s Creed: Revelations which is due to be released later this year on the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3. The new cheap televisions design has also been implemented which makes it much better for images of computer games and other media like videos as we can now use a much bigger size. More, much more, coming soon.

Assassin’s Creed II Video Review.

November isn’t just about Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 on the high definition games consoles. Although most titles have distanced themselves from the biggest release of 2009 there is another potentially triple A title coming to the Sony PS3 and Xbox 360 in the shape of Assassin’s Creed II. I was going to do a pictures post with screen shots for Assassin’s Creed II but have found something much better below. A video review. So is this a computer game we should all be rushing out to buy this Christmas and play on our large HD televisions?

Well just from the gameplay images and video I think Assassin’s Creed II looks like a visual feast. Gamespot gave it an editors choice review score of 9 out of ten and described Assassin’s Creed II as: “Assassin’s Creed II is what you’d want an action sequel to be: bigger, better, and more beautiful.”

The IGN Assassin’s Creed II video review above also gives it a glowing review with a score of 9.2. Their actual site review finished with “This is one case where the sequel has triumphed over the original by catching the gameplay up to the already excellent visuals. No matter what your preconceptions are about Assassin’s Creed II, the game is well worth your time and money.”

After watching Assassins Creed 2 video review it looks like another title that should be on everyones wish list this Christmas.

18% Buy HD Televisions For Gaming

According to a recent survey 18% of all HD televisions have been sold to customers mainly interested in using their TV for HD gaming on the Xbox 360 and Sony Playstation 3. Also another interesting statistic from the survey showed that 25% of American households now have at least 1 HD television.Maryann Baldwin from Magid Media Futures said “”Consumers who become accustomed to the sleek and contemporary appearance of their first HD set are now looking to bring that benefit into other rooms in their home.”

HD televisions and HD gaming is obviously becoming much more popular which I personally think is great.

Xbox 360 Price Cut

Finally it looks like the UK is about to get a price cut on Microsoft’s Xbox 360 games console (yay lol). In a trade report it claims that the price of an Xbox 360 should be around £30 cheaper than the current price which is the kind of thing we here at cheap TVs like to hear. Part of Microsoft’s move is in no doubt aggressive move towards the Nintendo Wii which currently has the more family computer games market sewn up! Not sure if the price cut will affect the Premium and Elite Xbox 360 consoles yet, but now all we want from Microsoft is more cheap Xbox 360 games (decent games anyway).

The trade report says “MCV has it on very good authority that Microsoft is planning an Xbox 360 price cut later this month. That would mean a dip from Arcade’s current price of £199.99 to something closer to £170. A few publishers have confirmed the news to us, and we’re aware that some price movement is coming. The major chain retailers have all been told”.

Sony PS3 hasn’t lived up to expectations!

Actually not my words but rather worryingly the words of Jack Tretton who works as the CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment America! He claimed that the reasons behind the Sony PS3′s slow start in the market is because Sony is trying to move the games industry towards high definition gaming. I think he’s needlessly blabbering as HDTV’s become the normal due to price drops and market forces in the future high definition gaming will become the standard anyway! Maybe he should have just admitted making the PS3 backward compatible, lack of must own games and the very high price point compared to the Wii and Xbox 360 are the real reasons that the PS3 has had such a slow sales start in the games console market!Speaking to MSNBC SCEA CEO Jack Tretton said about the PS3 “I think the PS3’s first year fell short of what we’d ideally like. But if you put it into perspective, we’re not taking the safe route. We didn’t take the PS2 and add a few bells and whistles to it. What we’re trying to do here is refocus the game industry towards high-definition gaming, a real state-of-the-art, future-proof machine for the next decade. The beauty of this business is that it isn’t all about one day, it isn’t all about one title, or one month. I think there’s a tremendous amount of software for the holiday season — 160 games coming out on PS3 alone for this holiday, on top of the 200 games that have already been out there, so there’s more than enough great software for consumers to sink their teeth in for the holidays. We’ve got 19 exclusives, and again, I think that’s something that’s a pretty amazing feat in the first year of a platform’s lifecycle. And they’re not just games that are exclusive for the sake of exclusivity, they’re games that are built and differentiated for the PS3 and just couldn’t be done on any other platform.”

I think sales of the PS3 will start to increase in 2008 and eventually overtake the Nintendo Wii and Xbox 360, but it really does need some exclusive must own games.
