Sony Not Worried By Slow 3D TV & Game Sales

This week a Sony Computer Entertainment executive has been saying Sony isn’t overly concerned about the slow sales of 3D televisions and 3D Playstation 3 computer games. Apparently it is easy for games developers to convert their games for 3D televisions on the PS3 and believes Sony will continue to deliver both HD and 3D games for the foreseeable future despite a lack of demand for the new technology.

Senior Sony Computer Entertainment Europe development manager and 3D chief Simon Benson apparently told GI.biz “It’s certainly not a concern for us on the gaming side, the major reason being it’s not like when we’re adding 3D features to a game, it’s not a significant overhead for us. It’s not like we have to justify being able to sell millions more games because of it, it’s just another feature of the game.”

“The developers that we’ve worked with adding 3D features to the games, it’s typically been done through passion of the development teams and interest of the designers to deliver new experiences. It’s not often about the financial side of things. Because it isn’t a huge overhead. It’s not like in 3D live production (TV and movies) where someone has got to make the decision about hiring cameras that cost twice as much and doing post processing that costs ten times more and it’s a significant overhead, there you really have to look at the numbers.”

“What we’re talking about here is, in some cases we’ve had titles where 3D has been half a per cent of overhead. It can literally be the render programmer spending a couple of weeks manipulating it. Particularly if a game already has split screen in it, just take that mode of the game and re-author it to deliver really high quality 3D. So often it’s the case of it doesn’t even hit the radar of whether we should or shouldn’t, it can just be done.”

Two Tesco TV Deals

Tesco are currently running a sale on their sound and vision site, or as they call it “Summer Madness”. We’ve been hunting around and thought we’d tell you about two current Tesco TV deals on Sony Bravia HD LCD televisions.

The first of these TV deals at Tesco is the Sony KDL32 CX523 32 inch Widescreen Full HD 1080p LCD TV with Internet TV & Freeview HD. A full HD TV with a pretty good review score on Reevoo of 8.3 from 20 reviews for a reasonably cheap price of £399.99.

The second offer is for another, more expensive, 32 inch Sony television. The Sony KDL32 EX523 32 inch Widescreen Full HD 1080p LED TV with Freeview HD. Again another very good review score of 8.8 on Reevoo and in the Tesco sale for £549.00.

32 inch televisions were the most popular size not that long ago, but now customers want the biggest tele they can afford and the 32″ set has fallen out of favour. However these two Sony LCD screens shouldn’t be ignored as there Bravia series is always high quality. We especially like that they both come with built in Freeview HD too. Anyway we’ll bring you the best Tesco TV deals when we hear about them very soon.

The guys over at What HiFi provide us with excellent reviews on televisions and home entertainment equipment and now they have announced their 2010 TV awards with the Sony KDL-40EX503 40 inch LCD TV winning the television of the year 2010. They gave the Sony KDL-40EX503 television 5 out of 5 stars in their review and describe it as “Sensational value for money; class-leading picture quality across the board; Freeview HD tuner; sounds impressively detailed”.

Sony BDPS370 Blu-ray Player

We haven’t looked at the wonderful high definition world of Blu-ray DVD players on cheap televisions for some time so we thought it would be a good idea to take a closer look at (UK) Amazon’s best selling Blu-ray DVD player, the Sony BDPS370 Blu-ray Player. The first thing that sticks out for us at cheap TVs is the cheap price tag coming in at £119 on Amazon, compared to say a year ago this is a pretty big drop in the price for a Sony branded Blu-ray DVD player but is BDPS370 such a good bargain?

Ok let’s start with the boring bits first and Sony’s description on the Sony BDPS370 Blu-ray Player:

Enjoy Blu-ray Disc movies in Full HD1080p quality and your existing DVD collection in near HD quality thanks to the player’s upscale functionality and HDMI connection. The S370 also features BRAVIA Internet Video allowing you to access movies, TV shows, and music from YouTube, BBC iPlayer and more. Connect via the Ethernet connection or the optional wireless adaptor (sold separately) to get online without the need for another cable. You can even use your iPhone or iPod touch as a remote control for the S370 by downloading the free BD Remote app.”

3 things stand out for us which are, 1 the claim the upscale ability of the Sony BDPS370 Blu-ray player produces near HD quality! We find this hard to believe but cheap televisions will hold judgement and wait to see what the user reviews actually say first. 2 the ability to watch Youtube and BBC iPlayer through the Sony BDPS370 directly onto your television screen! Now this isn’t anything new but I’ve seen so many flawed attempts not to mention on a large screen the youtube and iPlayer resolutions are just too small. 3 That you can use your iPod touch, iPhone and I guess the IPad as well to control the Sony BDPS370 Blu-ray DVD player. I wish this was an industry standard (being an iPhone user anyway) as I’d only need one phone to control all the gadgets in my house lol!.

The spiel about the Sony BDPS370 Blu-ray Player continues without much other interest other than to convince the reader of it’s amazing HD picture quality and so on below:

Anyway let’s get to the reviews for the Sony BDPS370 Blu-ray DVD Player which on Amazon has scored 4 and a half stars out of 5 from 107 user reviews (the best kinds of reviews). This is a pretty large sample of reviewers which seems to verify that this Blu-ray DVD player from Sony isn’t only affordable but is also a very good performer! It’s hard for us to do a proper review of the Sony BDPS370 Blu-ray Player for cheap televisions as Sony are a bit rubbish and refuse to let cheap televisions have access to test TV screens and Blu-ray DVD players but we still live in hope that this will change one day! So the user reviews:

K. Mundell (N.Ireland): ” Just got this today for a relatives birthday present. Extremely fast and slick but was at first disappointed that the BBC iplayer wasn’t available this afternoon when I looked for it. Just got an update this evening (31/3/2010) and now BBC iplayer works perfectly, and yes, BBC HD works like a dream on iplayer. Had no problem streaming Lovefilm movies to my TV although I consider myself lucky as our Sky broadband is around 13 meg speed in real terms. One last thing is the HD streaming to the player looks the same quality as blu ray discs although our TV is 720p only. Lovefilm SD movies are the same quality as ordinary DVDs (or near DVD at least)”

Mr. John Hogarth “JonHoggy” (UK): “It’s quality, lush vivid colours and handles gloomy dark scenes with ease. It’s clever, the playback on .mkvs and .avis via USB is seamless (but only tried <4GB so far). It’s packed with features, connecting it to your router via ethernet and using the BBC iplayer is easy and some broadcasts are nearly on par with live freeview quality. Some of the other internet content is fun to use too, especially the Lovefilm HD film trailers. One thing to note, no cables are supplied with the player, it’s simply the unit and the remote. Superb all round performance, buy one.”

Eric N. Jones Sony BDPS370 after 2 months of use: “This player is neat, slim and unobtrusive and does everything it says on the box. I have one criticism: It’s not possible to read the display from a normal TV viewing distance.”

If that isn’t enough the professionals also rate the Sony BDPS370 Bluray DVD player pretty highly!

The guys at TechRadar reviewed the Sony BDPS370 giving it a gleaming review, confirming the customer reviews from Amazon and gave it 5 out of 5 stars! They described it as a ” Stylish Blu-ray player with superb picture and top class inherent capability.” They also go on to say ” The Sony BDP-S370 sports such delights as wired and wireless networking capability, a raft of internet video services including iPlayer in HD and what Sony calls a Monolithic design.” Looks like we’re onto a winner with the Sony BDP-S370 already!

WhatHiFi also give the Sony BDP-S370 5 out of 5 stars in their review which I think pretty much confirms everything we thought and confirms the users actual experiences are the same as the guys that test them! What they said was ” Sony’s first machine for 2010 shows no signs of weakness – the ’S370 is an exceptionally gifted entry-level player”. Which i think is enough of the reviews for this high definition Sony bluray DVD player. The technical details are below if anyone is actually interested but if you buy it, especially at a good cheap price you won’t be disappointed.

Right the Easter weekend was fun, still got a few more pictures taken with the Canon 1000D and Tokina 12-24mm lens of the Southend Shakedown to upload. But first it’s time to get away from motorbikes on cheap television and back to our bread and butter of TV deals. Amazon UK are currently promoting 3 Sony Bravia LCD televisions in their top offers section. The TV screens are a 26″, 32″ and 40″ in size with the cheapest starting at £299.99.

Cheap Sony Bravia Television

The cheapest of the bunch is rather obviously the 26″ Sony TV. Coming in at a reasonable £299.99. The exact model is Sony Bravia KDL26S5500 26-inch Widescreen HD Ready LCD TV with Freeview! The Amazon user reviews give it 4 out of 5 stars based on 42 reviews which is a pretty good score.

Next up is the Sony Bravia KDL32W5500U 32-inch Widescreen Full HD 1080p LCD TV with Freeview, 100Hz Motionflow and 3-Year Warranty. Obviously this is a big step up from the cheaper and smaller Sony Bravia KDL26S5500 TV and costs £499.99 in the Amazon special offer. It is a more substantial television though being full HD, 100MHZ and that added security of the 3 year warranty make this deal look very good. Amazon reviews give the Sony Bravia KDL32W5500U 4.5 stars out of 5 from 87 reviews which is exceptional.

Last but not least in the Amazon offer is the Sony Bravia KDL40W5500U 40-inch Widescreen Full HD 1080p LCD TV with Freeview, 100Hz Motionflow and 3-Year Warranty for £679.99. Again all the benefits that the Bravia KDL32W5500U has but the big advantage of being a good size. Again has 4.5 out of 5 in the user reviews but this time from 159 reviewers.
All of these look like very good Sony Bravia televisions. I know Amazon call them offers but I’m pretty sure you could find these cheaper elsewhere although buying from company with a good reputation like Amazon is sometimes worth the slight extra premium when purchasing the larger two screens they have in this deal.

Sony BDP-S760 Blu-Ray DVD Player.

Just been reading some reviews of the Sony BDP-S760 Blu-ray DVD player on Techradar and What HiFi and from the sounds of it this could be the best Blu-Ray DVD player you can currently buy Without spending vast amounts of money and taking a second job to finance it! Costing around £300 the Sony BDP-S760 Blu-ray DVD player is cheap and it should out perform the PS3′s Blu-Ray DVD playback on your television.

Both Techradar and What HiFi gave the Sony BDP-S760 Blu-ray DVD player 5 out of 5 stars in their reviews.

Techradar Sony BDP-S760 Blu-ray DVD player review said:

“I don’t think there’s any player currently available at this price point that compares for Blu-ray playback. I’m still a massive fan of LG’s BD390 for its media-streaming abilities, but maybe I’ll have to find a place in my rack for the BDP-S760 as well. It is a reference machine for the budget conscious.”

Play.com currently have the Full HD Sony Bravia KDL-40W5500 40″ LCD TV as their Deal Of The Week in the cheap televisions section. At a relatively cheap LCD TV £699.99 including free delivery and 3 year warranty I think it’s very good value especially considering Tesco Direct are selling refurbished Sony Bravia 40W5500 40″ LCD TV for £899.99! Crazy when you compare the best prices, deals and quality of cheap televisions sometimes.

The marketing spiel about the Sony Bravia KDL-40W5500 full HD 40 inch LCD television says “The Bravia W5500 has all the Sony technology you need to experience a new level of entertainment. Bravia Engine 3 digital processing delivers a depth, richness and clarity that will take your breath away. Motionflow 100Hz technology keeps fast-moving sports and action crisp and clear.”

Although this is their television deal of the week the Sony Bravia KDL-40W5500 LCD TV looks good in the reviews too. Customers from play.com have given it an average of 5 out of 5 stars with one of them saying “Just upgraded from one of the first Samsung 40 inch lcd 1080p televisions to hit the market and I certainly made the right choice. This TV is superb. Upscaled dvd’s and blu ray are stunning. Freeview provides a very solid picture and the menu system is very good.”

The review from What HiFi wasn’t as generous giving it 4 out of 5 stars and although they were impressed with this LCD TV they complained about the irregular backlighting which is why they didn’t give it the full 5 stars in their review: “That’s where the Sony’s fifth star has gone. We don’t think our KDL-40W5500 is faulty, we just don’t think the backlighting is good enough.”

The KDL-40W5500 Sony Bravia LCD TV doesn’t come with built in Freesat like some of the newer models but you can get up to £150 of you money back in the Sony Trade-In offer.

Sony BDP-S360 Blu-ray DVD Player.

Play are currently offering the Sony BDP-S360 Blu-ray DVD player as their deal of the week. Cheap televisions thinks this is a seriously good deal at £135. This Blu-ray DVD player got 5 out of 5 stars in the review by What Hi-Fi and that’s when the BDP-S360 wasn’t so cheap (costing around £240).

Probably more useful for those of you looking for a cheap Blu-ray DVD player is one of the reviews by a consumer on the Play site which says: “The unit itself is surprisingly small it’s the normal width and height for a DVD/Blu Ray player/home cinema unit but it’s only about half the depth.
